This is a random little Inception ficlet for [ profile] cunning_croft who is lovely and kind.

On the fuglification of Richard Armitage: Oh Peter Jackson, how could you do this to Richard Armitage? For those not familiar with Mr Armitage, he normally looks like this. Better, right?

On Harry Potter: I'm not super fannish about Harry Potter. I only went to the midnight screening because a friend organised it and I've never been involved in the fandom. Occasionally I feel the urge to read fic for certain characters - I went through a Tonks/Lupin phase last year and right now I'm reading a quite good James/Lily fic (though it does have the most appalling overuse of epithets I've ever seen. The Gryffindor/the redhead/the witch/the prefect - just call her Lily).

Random thoughts on Slytherin and house rivalry )

On Inception: Five ways I would describe Arthur in canon: loyal, capable, intelligent, sarcastic, well-dressed.

Five ways I would describe Arthur in fanon: repressed, aloof, unimaginative, cold, constantly wearing a three-piece suit.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I've gotten a couple of comments during the past month on the costume meta that I wrote and they've all mentioned that they also think that canonical Arthur is nowhere near as uptight as the fandom generally writes him. More on characterisation )

On Harry Potter and Inception: My dashboard on Tumblr was 40% Harry Potter and 40% Inception all weekend. So I sent the dream team to Hogwarts.

Fic: Construction )
bennet_7: (D&B Show: Well that's one thing we got)
The title of this fic is adapted from a Raymond Chandler short story, Trouble is My Business, because Gossip Girl episode titles are always based on other works. In the process of writing this I picked up my copy of The Big Sleep, the second sentence of which is as follows:

I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them.

My brain kind of melts at the thought of Bogey wearing a powder-blue suit. Thank goodness that movie was shot in black and white.

Title: Trouble is Our Business
Fandom: The Dan and Blair Show
Characters: Dan and Blair (obviously), others mentioned
Rating: PG
Word count: 771
Warnings: Crack
Summary: Waldorf and Humphrey, detectives for hire.
Author's note: Part of my non-canonical crime fighters thing that I am doing apparently (tag).

Uh, Waldorf? Why are we at Burberry? )

1. Tonight's episode of The Chicago Code was the weakest so far but still enjoyable. There was a greater focus on the crime solving, rather than the corruption, so maybe that was it. But there were still a lot of excellent character moments and I continue to love the relationship between Jarek and Teresa. You really get a sense of the history between them and I like that when he pushes her buttons, she pushes right back. On other shows with this kind of power dynamic (woman in charge of male hero), the man is generally allowed by the show to be as disrespectful to her authority as he likes because he is always right and also, she is generally a shrill wet blanket. But there is so much mutual respect between them and sometimes they are downright playful with each other. It's great.

And at this point, I really hope they stay just friends. The actors have great chemistry and I wouldn't be opposed to reading fic, but I'm not in a 'shipping place with them - their friendship/professional relationship is far more interesting to me.

2. I don't know if you've heard, but there's a new Gossip Girl web series called The Dan and Blair Show and it gets uploaded here. As someone who checked out of Gossip Girl in season two because it wasn't good, I've been really impressed with the quality of the writing, pacing, and acting of The Dan and Blair Show. We've watched them go from a crime-fighting duo, to work rivals, to secret friends, and now, perhaps, something more. I am sure the writers will find a way to mess this up, but for now I am enjoying the references to The Philadelphia Story, the way they support each other's career aspirations, and the banter. I think they should run off to a pocket universe together.

For those of you who have not heard of Ada Lovelace, she was Byron's (yes, that Byron) only legitimate daughter. Her mother, fearing that she would take after her father, raised her on a steady diet of maths, science, and maths, so that when she grew up she was one of the few to understand the design and purpose of Charles Babbage's analytical machine, an early precursor to the computer. Because she wrote an algorithm for the machine, she's considered by many to be the world's first computer programmer. In reality she died at thirty-six from cancer, so it's nice that she's been pulled from the pages of history to be awesome and fight crime.

4. It just now occurs to me that I only really care for people fighting crime when that's not their actual job. So have some ficlets about non-canonical crime fighting duos:

From Gilmore Girls: Lorelai and Michel )

From Inception: Arthur and Ariadne )
bennet_7: (I: The Pointman)
This is largely for my own use - just wanted to get some thinky-thoughts down somewhere - but on the basis that others might find it interesting I thought I'd share.

On the characters of Inception, particularly Arthur, Ariadne, and Eames )
bennet_7: (I: Even in Arcadia)
Something I wrote over a week ago while putting together the costume meta. It was originally going to be a lot sadder but I'm a complete wuss about killing characters.

Title: Démence précoce
Fandom: Inception
Characters: Dom Cobb, Phillipa, James, Arthur, appearances by the team
Rating: PG-13 for mature themes
Word count: 1,666
Genre: Angst
Summary: Everyone sees the world differently and for Dom Cobb this is especially true - he just doesn't know it.

Arthur arrives four months after Dom gets home. One morning he just walks past the study and sees Arthur there, framed in the open door. )

This is for an [ profile] inception_kink prompt:

Fandom's aversion to writing OC while understandable produces as a side effect characters who are unrealistically isolated. This is true of all characters (write me ALL the fic!) but I find Arthur is the one often deliberately portrayed as so dependent on the Cobbs he's not allowed any outside interaction until Ariadne comes along to be his BFF + whatever character is the chosen love interest. I suppose valid characterisation but not what I want.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write about the people Arthur interacts with who are not the Inception team. I want stories of Arthur's army buddies(or whoever) going out for drinks. Tell me who is Cobb sending his regards to when he and Arthur discuss splitting up on the roof right before Saito shows up. What is Arthur like with his contacts (he's the intel guy he must have those, right?), is he tolerated as necessary evil or does he have trusted friends among them? He totally flirts with the cashier at the corner shop, right? Maybe Arthur is trying to integrate Ariadne into his circle of friends, how's that going?

You can have whatever parings you want with it just let there be other people in existence.

Title: No man is an island, entire of itself
Fandom: Inception
Character: Arthur
Rating: G
Word count: 1,519
Genre: Gen
Summary: Arthur has friends and a family and interests outside of helping Dominick Cobb.

Mike's been at the embassy for eight months now and in that time he's acquired a love of Duck confit, cream sauces, and the less expensive vintages from Château Mouton Rothschild. Arthur raises an eyebrow at his waist and tells him that it shows. Mike tosses a chunk of baguette at his head, challenges him to finish the bottle, and then they'll see who can run from Pont de Bir-Hakeim to Pont Rouelle the fastest. )

Some days I just don't know what to do with myself.

This is a very random and insubstantial fill for a prompt over at [ profile] inception_kink. The prompter wanted Ariadne and Arthur during a blackout in New York City. The Ghostbusters references are all me, though.

Title: Lights out
Fandom: Inception
Characters: Arthur, Ariadne
Rating: PG (if that)
Word count: 1,185

They’re on the balcony, watching the sun slowly set, when all over New York the lights wink out. They turn to see that Arthur’s apartment is no exception. “Oh, excellent,” he says. )

Ho hum. I've actually got a couple of Inception fics half-written that I'm not sure I'll finish but I wanted to inspire myself to do so. So, I wandered over to the Inception kink meme, looking for a prompt I could quickly dash off in the comments. Well, this is ended up being rather more than a dash. Also, I twisted the prompt a little so that I could write about Arthur being a badass.

Title: Better run, better run, outrun my gun
Fandom: Inception
Characters: Arthur, Ariadne, Cobb, Eames, Yusuf, Mal, Saito (slight A/A)
Rating: PG-13 (some language and violence, natch)
Word count: 1,488
Summary: For the [ profile] inception_kink prompt "Five times Arthur protected the team and one time they protected him." Basically, Arthur is a BAMF.
Author's notes: Title from 'Pumped Up Kicks' by Foster The People.

Arthur, will you please remove the stick from your arse and hit some of these projections with it! )
bennet_7: (10 Things: Whistle)
I wrote 10 Things I Hate About You fic. *head desk*

In my defense it was 2:30 in the morning and I had the flu. I edited it with a glass of wine in hand.

Title: To savour schadenfreude is devilish
Characters: Kat, Patrick
Word count: 1,014
Rating: PG
Summary: Five things Kat never said at the party. Patrick spends the day pulling Kat's leg (no, not the super fun way). Could be considered missing scenes from 1.10.
Spoilers: Set during the season finale.

bennet_7: (Iron Man: Pepper your eyes are red too)
Hi, my name is Bennet and I am obsessed with Iron Man. For reals. Especially Tony/Pepper. When I walked out of that cinema the first time (oh yeah, I've seen it twice) I immediately went home and prayed that someone, somewhere had written fic. Someones (yes! plural!) have written fic and it is mostly awesome.

Since then I've Iron Man-ified my layout, made icons, and now that I've finally finished my assignments, I've written fic (pick your jaws up off the floor people!). Everyone and their dog has compared Tony and Pepper to Josh and Donna from The West Wing, so I decided to take a whack at Pepper and Donna's totally awesome friendship that would have definitely happened had they ever met. Hopefully this will be the first of many fics (I have two more planned in my head but that doesn't mean I'll actually write them).

Oh, and I finished writing this at 6:00 AM so it may be crap.

Title: The Long-Suffering Assistants Club
Fandom: Iron Man (movie-verse)/The West Wing
Characters: Pepper Potts, Donna Moss, Sam Seaborn, Tony Stark, mentions of other West Wing staffers
Rating: PG - if that
Word count: 1,292
Warnings: None except for extreme West Wing geekery
Summary: Pepper Potts and Donna Moss meet at a Hollywood fundraiser. It's the start of a beautiful friendship. Pre-movie for Iron Man, mid-season 1 for West Wing

Notes: I am a huge West Wing geek so there's a few references which won't make much sense to non-fans. For those brave enough to try and read this without having seen one, here's a quick breakdown: Pepper Potts is the Personal Assistant to Tony Stark, genius weapons designer and CEO of Stark Industries. Donna Moss is the Senior Assistant to Josh Lyman, Deputy Chief-of-Staff. Both women have to deal with bosses who are sometimes demanding, possessive jackasses and with whom they share rampant UST.

I was originally going to set this during the West Wing episode '20 hours in L.A.' but I decided not to. Still, similar circumstances.

“And then there’s the late nights – ” “The endless meetings – ” “The messy love-life you always get entangled in – ”  )
