Too often have I read fics where he's dressed in blacks and grays and where his subconscious dreamscape is nothing but structured buildings in gray masses.

I've read those fics too! And rolled my eyes at them.

As for Arthur's suspenders, they are the traditional/formal choice, rather than a belt. But here they are the practical choice: Arthur's waistcoat falls over the waistband of his trousers, so a belt would have bulged beneath the material.

I also think that, given how much JGL was being thrown about, landing on a belt, particularly the buckle, would have hurt more than suspenders, which are thinner and chiefly comprised of fabric.
