Is The O.C. giving VM a shout out?

So Fox sends me an email each month telling me about their shows.

I clicked on The O.C. and they had the cover art for the 5th sound track.

And I discovered what was either a shout out to VM or another case of the two shows doubling up.

As you can see, it clearly says "GO PIRATES!"

So we have a couple of options:

1. Harbor also has a football/soccer/basketball/baseball/water polo team who are called the pirates. Ok. Except I don't think I've ever heard about them (bear in mind that I haven't seen the third series yet)

2. It's a shout out to VM.

3. The O.C. is blatantly ripping of a VM catch phrase. Because "Go Pirates" is a VM catch phrase. Veronica has said it at least three times. The pilot, Kanes and Abel's, and Ahoy Mateys. There are signs on the set which say "Go Pirates" and TWoP/Glarkware made up a hoodie which says "Go Pirates" and was done in Neptune High green. Not  Harbor red.

That phrase is associated with VM and The OC shouldn't have gone there. Unless they went there first. Still, it is a big part of VM while it has never made an impression on me in The OC. And I'm not saying that The OC isn't allowed to say 'Go Pirates'. Ok. Maybe I am.

Maybe the clever clever artist (not) thought they were giving a subtle shout out to VM. It's not subtle. It was the first thing I noticed. The OC: you were much better with the pop culture references in the first season.

Also Brody and Mackensie look constipated and squinty and Barton looks sun burnt. They should change the pics.

i don't know if it's been referenced in early eps, but there was a reference to the team at harbour being called pirates in the ep i watched today from the the third season.

Yeah I haven't seen the third season yet because ratings season is over in oz. I wonder why they did it considering the similarites already there between the two shows. The whole thing kind of boggles me.

Yeah I've heard the pirates talked about a few times on The OC. Last ep I think Seth dressed up as one to try and be the school mascot. I agree about the pics on the cover, not very flattering.

Seth as a pirate? That's a very interesting (hilarious) mental image.

They've been the pirates since the eighth episode of the first season, when Ryan first applies to school and Seth says "You're a pirate now!"

So, no. If anyone stole it, it was VM.

Cool. I thought that there was some mention in season 1 but I couldn't remember which ep (or if it was just a product of my imagination).

And Rob Thomas you thief! I've heard that he doesn't watch The O.C. but has staff members who do. I would have thought someone might have pointed it out to him.

Oh, so true, so true.

Nope, Pirates are Harbor's mascot. They were the mascot of the rival high school to mine, too, so I take issue with the "Go Pirates!" thing in general. In my point of view it should always (always) be "Go Knights," no matter how few sporting events I attended. It's a pretty common school mascot, so I'm not that surprised that both fictional schools would choose it.

Harbor's mascot is the Pirates. It's been since the first season, so they aren't ripping off us...

The OC's mascot is also the pirates.

[identity profile] n0sleept0night.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe they are the Harbor Pirates. I noticed that in season 1. I don't watch the show anymore but the school's mascot was never a big deal. I am sure it is just coincidence.

I agree with everything people say. And in the canon x-over mind set, it makes sense that two schools in the same state have the same mascot. Up here in Washington there are Cougers at Curtis High, and Cougers at another high school up in Seattle. :)
Though I admit that my love for Neptune Pirates knows no bounds. *pets Veronica* I just love her school pride! ;D

I think the Pirates for VM were selected because that's what their filming high school's mascot is... or am I wrong and mixing up shows?

[identity profile] uptheapples.livejournal.com 2005-12-16 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
It was just coincidence that the filming school had the same mascot. They were written as Pirates in the original script.

[identity profile] tigger4.livejournal.com 2005-12-20 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see it as a big deal with them both being pirates... when I was in high school, we were the Raiders... and our biggest rival was also the Raiders... it was funny when people in the audience shouted "Go Raiders" during thoes games but it was a little annoying that we couldn't do any of our "go raiders" cheers (yeah... I was a cheerleader...)

So it's quite common where two schools very close to each other have the same mascot.. unoriginal... but still common...

I totally saw that the other day and was like "Eh?" cause I was wearing my TwoP Go Pirates hoody at the time and I was all like "I swear that phrase is a VM thing."

Then I just thought it was The OC trying to be as cool as Veronica Mars. And failing. And I say that with the upmost OC love as it's my favourite show.

But that album cover is ultimately THE most try-hard thing I have evr seen. It sucks.
