In rom coms there are actually at least 50% male characters. There is also the straight best friend of the male lead, who is often the third biggest character and an audience favorite, all kinds of relatives, co-workers, neighbors, etc ect. There is no genre in which there are more female characters (although they might be couple of films- very few) Even "Thelma and Luise" only has two female characters...
So fact is women are quite invisible in film, due to sexism, no way to argue that away. Who isn't part of the solution is part of the problem and that's definitely true for Nolan.
