So, like everyone and their mother, I saw Inception. And I thought it was pretty good. Great concept, great cast, great costumes, and great effects. However, I think Nolan isn't as skilled when it comes to dialogue and characterisation as he is with plot. Luckily, that's where the Inception fandom kicks ass and takes names. There is so much good fic out there, it's unbelievable. People are writing wonderful backgrounds for these characters, going into their motivations and relationships. I think that the reason Inception fandom is chugging along so nicely is that the lack of characterisation on Nolan's part allows for so many different interpretations of the characters.

I came away from the film looking for fic because if the characters weren't fully dimensional on the page, the actors made them compelling on screen. I particularly liked Arthur because: 1) played by JGL, whom I've crushed on since he cut his hair in the later seasons of 3rd Rock, 2) he is a loyal friend and incredibly competent at his job, 3) GQ-ness, 4) badass zero gravity fight. Ariadne was basically there to ask questions that the audience wanted answered and act as Cobb's therapist, but she took control of situations, called Cobb on his bullshit, and Ellen Page imbued her with enough spunk that I really liked her too.

Shipping them? Well it's kind of canon, but never has so much been made of so little. Still, I latched onto those teeny tiny moments and have been blessed with a fandom offering an unproportional response. Arthur/Ariadne fans: you're awesome.

I swear I was humming 'Slow Show' by the National as I left the theatre. Some of the lyrics work so well that it immediately became their song in my head, but from Arthur's perspective. Now, the traditional response would have been to make a fanmix but the fandom was flooded with those in the early days (hasn't much let up of late, either) and plus, I couldn't find many other songs to suit.

But I have always wanted to try one of [livejournal.com profile] picspammy's challenges and in this one, 'illustrate a song with a fandom', seemed like the perfect opportunity to mash 'Slow Show' and Inception together. The only problem was the lack of usable images. This was cobbled together using two different trailers, a couple of production stills, screencaps from (500) Days of Summer and Whip It, and various photoshoots that JGL and Page have done. Trying to make images from different sources of varying levels of quality, colouring, and lighting look cohesive was impossible. In the end I decided to embrace the variety and thus this picspam is a little schizophrenic.

I only used lyrics that I felt were relevant but this is still quite long - avoid if you're on dial-up.

Top Gear is taking forever to download so I've uploaded my Tony Stark fanmix for your enjoyment.

Normally I have a thing where the music for a fanmix has to be made up of music the character/s actually listen to. Unfortunately, I don't really know what Tony likes - I'd hazard a guess that he likes Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and maybe The Who. He certainly doesn't like bands like Fall Out Boy (if Pete Wentz ever tried to talk to him, Tony wouldn't have a clue who he was). So this mix is more indicative of my musical tastes than Tony's but whatever.

Hey there everyone. I'm posting from the megalab at uni. My first lecture only lasted an hour when it was supposed to go for three and I have some time to kill before I learn about killing French people (Thermidorian reaction this week).

I always feel slightly uncomfortable when I go on lj in such a public place but looking around I can see that at least half of the people here are on myspace so I'm in poor company.

I've been so busy lately with school and the new job, but most of my assignments are out of the way now which is good.

And now for something completely different.

Does anyone have a cover of Cheap Trick's "I want you to want me" that is not by Letters to Cleo, Chris Isaak, Lindsay Lohan or The Pucks? I'm looking for a version with an indie/alternative vibe going on for a fan mix I'm making (Kelly and Ryan from The Office have completely eaten my brain. Love them).

Secondly, can someone direct me to a user friendly mp3 editor? Preferably a free one. I have this live track with a sound check at the beginning that annoys me greatly and I'd like to cut it if possible.

If you're feeling a little down, may I suggest you head over to [livejournal.com profile] boysofculttv where there are many delightful picspams of the men from our favourite TV shows leaning against things. Not entirely safe for work as the Jamie-Bamber-in-a-towel-pics are in a couple - not that that is ever a bad thing.

I watched the first episode of the new Robin Hood and was not impressed. It does feature Richard Armitage (Mr Thornton from the recent North and South) but he's actually kind of fugly in this. I'll keep watching for a couple more eps because it is unintentionally funny.

Finally, please oh please universe, let the rumors about John Krasinski and Renee Zellsquintsalot be not true.

[livejournal.com profile] miniorr has asked for songs that remind you of JimandPam from The Office. I've actually been meaning to upload a mix for a while but I am...lazy Scranton.

I was going to just post the songs but somehow we now have an accompanying picspam and some fic recs.

[personal profile] koalathebear was discussing Jabberwocky here, a poem I adore. She reminded me that I had read a parody of the poem...somewhere.

After a bit of searching, I discovered it in The Even More Complete Book of Australian Verse by Australian satirist John Clarke.

The poem is not a parody of Jabberwocky; what it does is use the style of Jabberwocky to satirize Australian politics and politicians, in particular the 'Children Overboard' scandal. Some of the nonsense of words are not nonsense at all: 'ruddock' is a reference to Philip Ruddock who was the immigration minister at the time of the 'Children Overboard' scandal.

As such, the full effect of the poem will be lost on non-Australians but it is brilliantly written.

In the same book is a fantastic parody of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'I am the very model of a modern Major-General'. This one can be enjoyed by Aussies and non-Aussies alike ;-)

You can hear the original here

This book is truly excellent. I may post more of the parodied poems later as I love the Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost ones.

The 'Name the (x number) songs you're currently obsessed with' meme has been doing the rounds of my flist so I decided to join in the fun and actually uploaded the songs I'm really liking at the moment.

'Mr. Ambulance Driver' by The Flaming Lips

From their latest album, this is a very cool little track. I particularly like the line 'Mr. Ambulance Driver I'm not a real survivor'.

'Sex Changes' by The Dresden Dolls

Heh. Not one I'd play in front of my mother, but I love this song.

'Don't let me be misunderstood' by Santa Esmeralda

I have this from the Kill Bill V.1 soundtrack. Lots of fun.

'And Darling' by Tegan and Sara

From the album 'If it was you'. I think this was one of the songs they played when I went and saw them live - they were awesome.

'Who Sold Her Out' by Eskimo Joe

In preparation for their latest album's release, I listened to the first two Eskimo Joe albums a lot recently. I love this song but it really reminds me of the Duncan/Veronica relationship on Veronica Mars.

'If you see my girlfriend cry, just keep walking, pass her by, cos I'm not allowed to talk to her...'

([profile] miniorr this is a great angsty boy song with an awesome hook ;-))

'London Bombs' by Eskimo Joe

From their latest album. Not the song you expect given the title but it's just beautiful. Their second album, 'A Song is a City', settled for me that Eskimo Joe is one of Australia's best bands and their new album has just reinforced that opinion.

'Madeline and Nine' by Mike Doughty

I prefer this to 'I Hear the Bells' honestly  (*ducks*) . Love it.

'Mother Greer' by Augie March

Another Aussie band here. Though the lyrics don't always make sense, this is a gorgeous song.

So there you go ;-)
bennet_7: (WTF (Cassidy))
I've never done a music meme before and this one seemed fun. So I switched my iPod to 'shuffle' and my mp3 player mocked me.

bennet_7: (Dream team (Keith and Cliff))
So I got my new credit card today and upgraded my account.

But right now I really need to talk about the latest episode of 'Veronica Mars'.

So I YSId some songs for someone yesterday and since it's no trouble for me, here are the links.

Take em, don't take em; I don't really care :-)

1. 'I'm your Villain' by Franz Ferdinand

2. 'Step away from the cliff' by Blue-Eyed Son

3. 'Portions for Foxes' by Rilo Kiley

I'm always willing to upload particular songs or even whole albums. You just have to ask. Oh wait. You don't know what I have :-)

I downloaded this song two hours ago. I first heard it on the episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' where, at the end, Meredith stands in the rain with a bottle of wine. It might be episode 6 of season one. Can't be bothered to check. Anyway this song is just beautiful and I think I'm going to get the whole album.

'Never leave you heart alone' by Butterfly Boucher

And it's open
For distraction
You found all the words you need
Well I found nothing
I just grumble
'cause I don't know what I feel

The moral to the story goes
Never leave your heart
Never leave your heart... alone

Run for shelter
An umbrella
Fights the rain but not the wind
And I'd be silly
To start preaching
'cause I don't know which point to make!

The moral to the story goes
Never leave your heart
In a box
Locked up
With cold cold ice
Never leave your heart
...Never leave your heart... alone

Am I frozen?
But it's summer!
Is that rain or is that me?
Yes I'm melting
Please be happy
One day soon
We might just swim

The moral to the story goes
Never leave your heart
In a box
Locked up with cold cold ice
Never leave your heart
....Never leave your heart
.... Never leave your heart alone

Maybe you need to hear it in order to appreciate it, but it's my new favourite song.

The finale of 'House' is on in 10 minutes. Gotta go.
