1. There is a Tumblr dedicated to cats that look like Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation. And then Vulture called up Nick Offerman and got him to comment on some of the posts ("You wouldn't guess it, but that's a look of abject pleasure on both the cat and Ron," says Offerman. "That would be Ron sitting by a burbling stream, redolent of trout."). Oh internet! The random joy that you bring!

2. Speaking of Nick Offerman, I've started my West Wing rewatch and I saw him in episode 1x05 aka "The Crackpots and These Women". He played one of the crackpots, part of the delegation that speaks to CJ about Pluie the wolf and the wolves-only highway they want the government to build. It's just the kind of outdoorsy thing I can see Ron being interested in if it weren't for the fact that he hates to see tax payer's money spent so frivolously. So I have decided that Ron was once an idealistic young man who believed in big government and went to the White House to plead his case, only for him to be rebuffed by CJ's disbelief and thus he became the Libertarian curmudgeon we all know and love (and now compare to cats!). If only he'd known about the position paper CJ went on to write, about the necessity of wildlife protection...

3. Still enjoying The Chicago Code. It's definitely more about the corruption and the politics than it is about the cases, which is good because crime procedurals generally bore me to turning off the TV. One unexpected source of delight is the scenery. They film on location and they really take advantage of it by shooting the streets of Chicago in a very cinematic way: lots of wide pans and overhead shots. I had no idea Chicago was so beautiful.

And it's an interesting when juxtaposed with The Good Wife which is set in Chicago but actually shot in New York and deals with similar subject matter. Already I've gotten a much better sense of Chicago itself in the three episodes of Code than I have from the season and a half I've seen of Wife.

4. I think we're headed for trouble in the Community fandom. I think it'll look like a shipper war but speaking for myself it's actually more complicated than that. I feel that the second season hasn't had the same depth of character as the first, with Abed and Troy being the only characters to grow. Jeff and Annie get most of the focus (him out of all the characters - which, yes, he is the main character, I know - and her out of all the girls) but they keep on playing the same beats: he eventually realises that he does love this rag-tag bunch of misfits, she runs into conflict over her standards/perfectionism, and the ship teasing continues apace. Pierce has actually regressed as a character, becoming more and more unlikeable. Britta and Shirley get pushed into the background far too often for my liking and often come across as one-note (something I attribute entirely to the writing).

Anyway, I've noticed some disagreements breaking out between Jeff/Annie shippers and people who aren't Jeff/Annie shippers. Trouble is on the horizon. We'll see if the next few episodes keep it at a rumble or cause the fandom to splinter.

5. I'm currently drinking wine that cost me $8.00. I'm having a hard time detecting the notes of melon and guava it's supposed to possess, so I guess you get what you pay for.

So, like everyone and their mother, I saw Inception. And I thought it was pretty good. Great concept, great cast, great costumes, and great effects. However, I think Nolan isn't as skilled when it comes to dialogue and characterisation as he is with plot. Luckily, that's where the Inception fandom kicks ass and takes names. There is so much good fic out there, it's unbelievable. People are writing wonderful backgrounds for these characters, going into their motivations and relationships. I think that the reason Inception fandom is chugging along so nicely is that the lack of characterisation on Nolan's part allows for so many different interpretations of the characters.

I came away from the film looking for fic because if the characters weren't fully dimensional on the page, the actors made them compelling on screen. I particularly liked Arthur because: 1) played by JGL, whom I've crushed on since he cut his hair in the later seasons of 3rd Rock, 2) he is a loyal friend and incredibly competent at his job, 3) GQ-ness, 4) badass zero gravity fight. Ariadne was basically there to ask questions that the audience wanted answered and act as Cobb's therapist, but she took control of situations, called Cobb on his bullshit, and Ellen Page imbued her with enough spunk that I really liked her too.

Shipping them? Well it's kind of canon, but never has so much been made of so little. Still, I latched onto those teeny tiny moments and have been blessed with a fandom offering an unproportional response. Arthur/Ariadne fans: you're awesome.

I swear I was humming 'Slow Show' by the National as I left the theatre. Some of the lyrics work so well that it immediately became their song in my head, but from Arthur's perspective. Now, the traditional response would have been to make a fanmix but the fandom was flooded with those in the early days (hasn't much let up of late, either) and plus, I couldn't find many other songs to suit.

But I have always wanted to try one of [livejournal.com profile] picspammy's challenges and in this one, 'illustrate a song with a fandom', seemed like the perfect opportunity to mash 'Slow Show' and Inception together. The only problem was the lack of usable images. This was cobbled together using two different trailers, a couple of production stills, screencaps from (500) Days of Summer and Whip It, and various photoshoots that JGL and Page have done. Trying to make images from different sources of varying levels of quality, colouring, and lighting look cohesive was impossible. In the end I decided to embrace the variety and thus this picspam is a little schizophrenic.

I only used lyrics that I felt were relevant but this is still quite long - avoid if you're on dial-up.

I dreamed about you )

There has been a lot of fandomy talk on my flist in the past couple of days, but I don't want to re-hash that here. I'd rather just tell you how much I think you all rock. If I had the time I would write something nice about you individually but Hellenistic Greece (not to be confused with Hellenic Greece) demands to be studied and written about, so I won't - well not tonight anyway ;-)

Though I don't always comment, I do try to read all your wonderful, amazing, hilarious and insightful posts and they entertain me immensely; thank you.

And thanks for letting me blather about the most ridiculous things, try to be funny and ABUSE THE CAPS LOCK EVERY NOW AND AGAIN. I appreciate it more than I can say.

ETA: You'd think lj would include 'flist' as correct in the spell check wouldn't you? But alas, it is always picked up as being incorrect.

Veronica Mars got renewed for a third season!

I was so happy that I put on 'We used to be friends' and did the extended version of my VM credits dance. Which caused me to hurt my back.

Still.

YAY!

Thanks to all my fantastic fellow fans who helped out with the various campaigns but particularly the team behind [profile] cloud_watchers including my awesome [profile] neptune_online co-mod [profile] spadada

I'm just so happy!

So [profile] miniorr has written this fantastic post about the 'annoying Logan fangirls' (as I like to call them) and it basically sums up how I have been feeling about certain L/V shippers.

She also posted it to The LoVe Shack  (A Logan/Veronica fansite where most of said annoying shippers hang out (though there are some good posters as well)) and it was interesting to read some of the reactions.

[profile] miniorr (who goes by 'Mini_glik' on TWoP and other forums) is one of the most intelligent L/V shippers in the fandom and her posts are always thoughtfully written.

On the whole, I've found the fandom a lot more enjoyable of late, if a bit slow. However the lack of posting is probably a good thing. During the last hiatus we all went a bit nutty, and there was a lot of negativity, mostly because the last episode we saw was such a poor one (in terms of VM's normal caliber).

I can't wait for new episodes  but this hiatus has been much more bearable than the last one.

And now a challenge to keep this fandom positivity going.

So Beaver says "Remember Sally?" in 'Ain't no Magic Mountain High Enough.'

Who/what is Sally? Best answer wins...bragging rights.

Sally is... )
