Top Gear is taking forever to download so I've uploaded my Tony Stark fanmix for your enjoyment.
Normally I have a thing where the music for a fanmix has to be made up of music the character/s actually listen to. Unfortunately, I don't really know what Tony likes - I'd hazard a guess that he likes Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and maybe The Who. He certainly doesn't like bands like Fall Out Boy (if Pete Wentz ever tried to talk to him, Tony wouldn't have a clue who he was). So this mix is more indicative of my musical tastes than Tony's but whatever.

'I am a Scientist' - Guided by Voices
I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
All of my impurities and evils yet unknown
I am a journalist - I write to you to show you
I am an incurable
And nothing else behaves like me
And I know what's right
But I'm losing sight
Of the clues for which I search and choose
To abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind
I am a pharmacist
Prescriptions I will fill you
Potions, pills and medicines
To ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul
I shoot myself with rock & roll
The hole I dig is bottomless
But nothing else can set me free

'Streets of Where I'm From' - Old 97's
I've been down, I've been down too far to care -
I keep getting in my car but I'm not going anywhere.
And I've been had, well at least that's how it looks -
And it's not funny like on TV and it's not smart like it is in books.
And I wonder yeah I wonder how the world keeps spinnin' 'round.
Where's a boy with bad intentions gonna settle down?
And I don't know what you've been told,
The streets of where I'm from are paved with hearts instead of gold.

'North American Scum' - LCD Soundsystem
Oh I don't know, I don't know, oh, where to begin
When we're North American
But in the end we make the same mistakes all over again
Come on North Americans
We are North American scum
We're from North America

'Orange Crush' - Editors
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I've had my fun and now its time to
Serve your conscience overseas
Coming in fast, over me

'Ashes of American Flags' - Wilco
I wonder why we listen to poets
When nobody gives a fuck
How hot and sorrowful
This machine begs for luck
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new

'I Stand Corrected' - Vampire Weekend
You've been checking on my facts
And I admit I have been lax
In double-screening what I say
It wasn't funny anyway
I stand corrected
No one cares when you are wrong
But I've been at this far too long
To act like that when we should be
In perfect harmony

'Blue Monday' - New Order
Those who came before me
Lived through their vocations
From the past until completion
They will turn away no more
And I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But I'm quite sure that you'll tell me
Just how I should feel today
I see a ship in the harbor
I can and shall obey
But if it wasn't for your misfortunes
I'd be a heavenly person today

'What Difference Does it Make' - The Smiths
All men have secrets and here is mine
So let it be known
For we have been through hell and high tide
I think I can rely on you ...
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you
The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why
Because you asked me to
But now you make me feel so ashamed
Because I've only got two hands
Well, I'm still fond of you

'Altered Beast' - We Are Scientists
I should take my time
I should think this through
You know that not a lot of people have to talk like this
When you allow me life regrets to pass for rhetoric
Well it's not so much the words you say, it's how you use your lips

'Gold Star for Robot Boy' - Guided by Voices
If I waited for you
To signify the moves that I should make
I'll be on the take
Gold star for robot boy
Well then that's ok
If I waited for you
To show me all the actions I should take
Would I get my break?
Gold star for robot boy
And it's one thing
And it's something to do
The robot boy
If I waited for lessons
In true confessions that could take all day
But I'm here to stay
Gold star for robot boy
Well then that's my move
All songs - rar

Notes: Quite honestly, when I view other peoples' fanmixes and see two songs by the same artist I always roll my eyes and think 'Really? That's all the music you have?' But good lord, those two songs by Guided by Voices are so perfect that I had to have them both. In fact, I could probably do a fairly decent Tony mix using songs just from Bee Thousand - 'Awful Bliss' just may show up on a future Tony/Pepper mix. And yes I know, the lo-fi of 'Gold Star for Robot Boy' sounds a little weird coming after the heavily produced 'Altered Beast', but having been listening to this mix for the past week, it doesn't bother me so much.
The Smiths are one of my favourite bands and I considered a bunch of their songs for this mix. 'The Boy with the Thorn in His Side' and 'This Charming Man' were the obvious choices, and if one were looking at Tony's relationship with his father then 'Reel Around the Fountain' would be a good choice. But then, I was doing the vacuuming and 'What Difference Does It Make' came up on the shuffle and it reminded me of that moment when Tony says to Pepper "You stood by me all those years..." and now I suspect that a small part of Tony resents Pepper for enabling him all those years, for not showing him what his weapons were doing, for not being his conscience when she is person he thinks of as moral and good. That's a lot to infer from one line but anyway...
I originally had the Joy Division song 'A Means to an End' for the Tony/Obadiah relationship but it didn't work musically. Once I put the Smiths in, New Order's 'Blue Monday' did work (whenever, I discuss The Smiths and Joy Division/New Order in the same sentence I'm reminded of that line at the end of 24 Hour Party People where God appears and says "It's a pity you didn't sign the Smiths, but you were right about Mick Hucknell. His music's rubbish, and he's a ginger." And then I laugh).
Please comment if you're taking anything. Also, you may be interested in this post where I've started uploading the most recent Iron Man comics.
And sigh, Top Gear still hasn't finished downloading. Might be time to start the great Press Gang rewatch of 2008.

Date: 2010-03-21 02:21 pm (UTC)I think this link works but MU is currently acting sketchy for me. Let me know if it doesn't.
It's a rar, all songs are mp3 except for the Wilco track which is mp4 because I can't for the life of me find the mp3 on my hard drive. Enjoy!
