Last night/early this morning I was thinking about the film Night Watch, a Russian film that really impressed me. It's a vampire film like no other, eschewing the conventions of the genre for something truly fresh and original. You can learn more about it here. You can watch the trailer here. The sequel, Day Watch, has been released in Russia and parts of Europe but there is no word yet on when it will be released here. I may cave and dl it but I'd prefer to see a quality copy of it as the films are visually stunning.

The film and its upcoming sequels are based on four books by Russian Sci-fi novelist Sergey Lukyanenko. So far, only the first book has been translated into english and I've ordered it from Amazon. The second novel, The Day Watch, will be published in english early next year.

Copy right laws in Russia are quite different to those here in Australia and in the U.S. Lukyanenko encourages fanfiction to be written and has actually incorporated some story lines from fanfic (with the author's permission) into the series. And just today over at [profile] _night_watch_ Lukyanenko has revealed himself to be a member of the community and has agreed to answer questions!

All of this has left me wishing that my Russian wasn't limited to what I've learnt from reading Tom Clancy books ;-)
