Stuff and The Hour

- Aided and abetted by
cobweb_diamond I have been making ridiculous post-film Captain America graphics on Tumblr because lady spies are awesome. I am attempting fic on this theme so we'll see how that goes.
- But the Captain America fandom at large is weird and wanky. There's already been a big brouhaha over in the kink memes (yes, plural) and I'm a bit bemused by the fact that the most popular pairing on the most successful meme is Steve/Tony...and Tony wasn't even in the film.
- As for The Hour I am enjoying the conspiracy aspects and the adventures of Freddie Lyon, Boy Detective, but I really wish there was more focus on the actual running of the news program.
Oh, and also less ridiculous marital infidelity because, seriously, I do not get what's happening with Bel and Hector AT ALL for the following reasons.
1. Hector is married. He shouldn't be sleeping with other women. Bel shouldn't be sleeping with him.
2. Bel and Hector have not been portrayed as having an emotional affair - they don't have deep feelings for each other. So it's purely about attraction.
3. But Dominic West and Romola Garai don't have nearly the chemistry required to make me believe that these two character can't stand not fucking each other. So, why?
4. Bel is his boss. Even in this day and age it would be incredibly unprofessional to sleep with a married subordinate but back then, where she occupies a rare position of power, has to fight for the smallest measure of respect, and people expect her to fail, it's criminally stupid for her to do this. She doesn't love him so why is she risking everything she's worked for for this fling?
5. Because this can't end well. If he leaves his wife so that they can be together then they both lose their jobs because of the scandal. If they keep working and fucking they'll be found out and lose their jobs (I mean, Marnie already knows). If they keep working but stop fucking then the situation will awkward and uncomfortable and not at all conducive to running a successful news program. SO, BEL, WHYYYYYYYY?
6. It makes both characters look stupid and cruel.
Other thoughts:
- More Lix, please!
- More Ben Whishaw reciting poetry, please!
- I like Marnie. She's an excellent mean girl but she also does really love Hector and doesn't deserve his treatment of her.
- Why did Burn Gorman's character kill himself?
- I guessed that the actor was gay before it was confirmed.
I think the problem with The Hour - and there definitely is a problem - is that it's trying to be too many things: relationship drama, character study, conspiracy thriller, period drama, workplace drama. And it's one thing to build to these, but to attempt to be them all straight out of the gate is damn hard to do and The Hour is not pulling it off. But for now I'm invested in Freddie at least so I'm sticking with it.
