Nice to see the internet still exists.
Like pretty much everyone else in the world, today I read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I rather liked it. I've never been overly into Harry Potter but it is with a tinge of regret that I watch the series end.
When I picked up my copy I was somewhat surprised at the length; books 4, 5 and 6 are quite a bit longer and I thought that with this being the final book that it would be massive. Still, I don't think any other HP book has ever had more going on. There were no idle school days here and I thought the narrative was generally pretty tight. The pace was pretty quick too and I was surprised when we got our first death of a major character so soon - Hedwig.
To be honest, pets in films and books tend to drive me batty. In the film Cats and Dogs (which I was forced to see) I was seriously hoping that the cute Beagle would die so that the kid would learn (as I have had to) that pets do die. But Hedwig's death was quite a shock, as was Moody's which followed shortly after.
And Rowling didn't let up. The deaths of Dobby, Fred, Lupin and Tonks were very sad - I really didn't expect both Lupin and Tonks to die but it does force Harry into Sirius' role as godfather to an orphaned child which is interesting. Still, I actually expected the death count of the good guys to be higher.
There were certainly a lot of good guys to kill. I love how even Cho Chang and Oliver Wood were brought back - though what I really would have liked was an appearance by Amos Diggory (Cedric's father) at the final battle.
As usual, my biggest problem with the HP books were the characters. I found Harry and Ron insufferable for most of the book with their whiny emo crap. I still think Ron and Hermione really don't work as a couple. I was delighted to see more of Luna who is brilliant but my favourite character was Neville who was so damn awesome. Seriously.
In the end, Snape? Not evil. I've always thought he was good and have suspected his crush on Lily for ages. Seeing just how pivotal she is in his life, now I'm really surprised that she was cut from the Pensieve scene in the Order of the Pheonix film.
I could ramble on for ages but I won't. I'd just like to say thank you to J.K. Rowling for creating one of the most imaginative and well plotted series I have ever read.
